More Locations.

These are some more of the settings we are considering using for our video because it has the kind of look we are going for. We decided because the background is black it would add to the grungy feel, and it would look quite cool if we dressed it up a bit with tea lights and candles so we have a very dim light. 

We thought the idea of filming some shots on a bench when the natural light is dim to make it look more dingy. we aren't going to use the bench in this picture we are going to find one closer to the main filming location so that all the locations link in with each other better and will have a smoother finish. 

post modernism

Postmodernism is a critique of modernism. It is the process of taking what we believe to be real and the norm, and experimenting on it to change it. This would then slowly take over, and the new would become the norm. Post modernism can be approached and experimented with by anybody as everyone has different view on altering the modern world so they change it in ways to satisfy them. Post modernism isn't a dead end, but part of a cycle as it would eventually become the norm, and then like before, it will be altered and experimented with and so on. Post modernism comes after modernism. Modernism is what people consider to be the norm or something that hasn't been changed for a while. Post modernism is changing a trend and setting a new one. Basically, post modernism is the changing to the norm to be more satisfying for the consumer.

Music Director - Spike Jonze

This is the Music director I am looking at. He was active from 1989-present. He works with varieties of genres, and is more of an experimental director. His work has a unique feel to it, involving lots of shots that show this. For example, he created a whole music video where the whole entire thing was filmed backwards and then played forward to get the desired look. Its so cleverly done that you wouldn't notice that it was filmed backwards before hand.  He works with unique music which makes the videos even more visually interesting because its as interesting as the music.

Other locations.

When we actually started the shooting we found some other areas which we thought could work well along with the current woods, bar and shed setting. We looked at streets where cars came past, a room in drama for some band performances and a corner of an outside building, and we are going to try and incorporate more when we have a better idea of how we want the video to look once we've taken shots. 

Here is the building with the outside corner where we decided that we wanted joe to light his  cigarette. We filmed it at night so that it was dark to add to the grungy feel. 

This is the street we used for the fast forwarded part of the video where cars are coming from both sides of joe. we filmed this at night to so that we could get the lights from the cars going past and so that, like the corner of the building would give the grungy effect.

This is the hand out for our band, Tear Down. It gives a brief history,  their influences, and some information about them in general.  . We chose to put the picture of the lead singer as the background because people will be able to get a better idea on what type of style the band has and their distinguishing look. 

Band Profile.

Post Grunge.

Post grunge is a sub genre of alternative/hard rock. In the videos there is normally an edgy look due to the colours and lighting within it. Post grunge uses interesting instruments and sounds in their music, like distorted guitars. Throughout the history of post grunge, Bands would work with other genres with major record labels, this was different to the traditional grunge bands. 

Here are a few well known post grunge/alternative/hard rock bands.

Different Genres.

Here I have looked and researched into different genres of music. I did this because it will help me get a better understanding of what Goodwin expects in each genres. For example, rock, he says it would often be live performances, or stage performances, so now I know the subgenres I can see if the video I analyse is against or for his argument.

Record Labels. Major.v.Minor

I looked at the difference between major and minor/independent record labels, and just compared their advantages and dissadvantages, and noted a few down.

Digipaks

I looked at some digipaks. these are the ones I found the most intersting to analyse as each one had something different to the last. I mainly looked at the colours and what they connote because the colour is a main part in digipaks. I looked at the images and wording too but didnt have as much to talk about.

Music video analysis (same genre) 'Foo Fighters-All My Life'

Foo Fighters genre is a mixture of alternative rock, hard rock, and lastly post grunge.

Goodwin said that certain genres music videos have specific things within them. For example, post grunge, being a sub genre form alternative rock, and grunge, would be something like stage performances. The same way as a pop star would probably have a dance routine. In this video, Foo Fighters are doing what is expected, with stage performances. This is continued through a lot of the video and most of it is aimed to look live and realistic. 

There are not really any relationships between the lyrics and what's on the screen as most of it is performance based. Any emotion from the lyrics would have to be shown through the singer, which in this case there are no parts where he needs to cry, smile, or anything like that, so he just sings. The video is simple, just performing on stage. But the lights, and the shots used to present the band make it more complicated and edgy.

The shots are cut to the beat giving it a neat finish too. This is a key thing to do, otherwise if they are cut at different places in comparison to the beat, the video will end up mushed and not look as professional as it could.

There are a lot of close ups of the lead singer because everyone knows who he is. This helps the record company working with them because it is promotion for the band. Especially because he was associated with Nirvana it will attract people who listen(ed) to them and encourage them to listen to Foo Fighters.

Goodwin also talks in his theories about frequency reference to notion of looking, meaning, in this case, the use of the stage as it is a post grunge band. 

The colours in the video are very dark and echo the moodiness from the song well. This is another one of Goodwin theory. The way the video and lyrics work together to create an atmosphere. In this video Foo Fighters did exactly that. The surroundings in the video were dark and had low key lighting which creates a sinister atmosphere what works with the type of genre in this case. The clothes worn were typical 'post grunge'  clothing. 

Possible ideas for band appearance.

For our band they will have the typical grungy look; scruffy hair, dark clothes etc. Looking at already existing post grunge artists and bands there are a few key ideas which i think our band should have. For example, Tattoos, most post grunge bands have sleeves. Long hair, many people who are associated with this genre have long hair, this ties in with the scruffy look most grungy people have. Piercings, looking at bands such as Seether, they have quite a few body piercings, main ones being nose. Grunge fashion, maybe band tees, checkered shirts, baggy or skinny jeans. Even facial hair. A lot of the grungy/rock star people have huge beards, just because it fits into the look of 'grunge'. overall,  I think these are very distinguishing features in a post grunge band, even for rock bands they all have similar dress sense.

Here are some post grunge bands supporting this typical trend. 

Foo Fighters, a classic post grunge band, who are well known and meet majority of post grunge expectations; such as long/scruffy hair, graphic tees, tattoos, skinny jeans and majority of the clothes worn are darkish colours,


nickleback, another good example of a classic well known post grunge band, scruffy hair dos, baggy shredded jeans, band/graphic tees, dark clothing, facial hair and tattoos.

staind, not as known as the two previous, but still have some features of a typical post grunge genre band, but they are more individual and go against the steretypical grungy/post grunge features. They have the long hair, tattoos, piercing, skinny/baggy jeans and some graphic tees. 

My Band.

My band genre is post grunge, meaning there is going to be a lot of dark colours and gloomy scenes. The band will have the typical post grungy look to them. This means scruffy clothes, scruffy hair, and dark colours. The band me and my group have created is called Tear Down, this is because we thought it was the most appropriate name for a band of this genre. Our band is called this because we wanted to use it as a representation of what it means, which in this case, we are 'tearing down' the boundaries between what people expect the music to be like and what they actually are.

Here is a screen shot of when I google searched 'Post Grunge'. The colours are dark and gloomy, and the fashion is similar, with t-shirts, and skinny jeans, and just a laid back look in general, especially with the scruffy hair. 

Here are a few more of the photos which i found most appealing and similar to what our band is going to look and be like. They all have scruffy hair, and are all in reasonably dark clothing, and most of them have beards which is also considered scruffy so goes with the scruffy post grunge feel we need for our band. 

Mood Board

This is our mood board. We researched what type of people listen to post grunge, and the genre in general. We looked at the people individually and looked for similarities between them, like fashion; checked shirts and skinny jeans. We looked at bands also and found some good ones who we can relate to and use as key inspiration. we put some original photos on there too to show our clear understanding in what people expect from that specific genre. We found that the genre consists of a lot of dark clothing and gloominess in general and can connote sadness, and depression which many of this type of genres songs are about. I think this mood boards benefitted us, and helped us a lot more by showing us clear expectations giving us an image to match.

Goodwins Theory.
